The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is characterized by the presence of specialized vasculature that prevent a large majority of proteins and other molecules from entering the brain. This barrier has long been labeled a "bottleneck" for delivering drugs to the brain for treatments of central nervous system disorders (for example: Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and stroke). My research involves mining combinatorial libraries of antibody fragments (scFv) for individual scFv that can get past the BBB and enter the brain.
